Virginia RSVP – Responsible Sellers & Servers: Virginia’s Program
Virginia’s Responsible Sellers & Servers Program (RSVP) is a voluntary alcohol
server training initiative offered through the Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Authority.
While not mandated statewide, RSVP certification is strongly encouraged for bartenders,
servers, sellers, managers, cashiers, and anyone responsible for checking IDs or handling alcohol.
The program focuses on preventing sales to minors or intoxicated persons, understanding
Virginia’s alcohol laws, and improving compliance. When violations occur, proof of RSVP
training may be treated as a mitigating factor during administrative hearings,
potentially reducing penalties.
Most Virginia-aligned server training programs — including RSVP — issue certificates valid for
3 years.
