Michigan MLCC Server Training Requirement

Michigan law requires certain on-premises licensees to complete server training approved by the Michigan Liquor Control Commission (MLCC). For new on-premises licenses, and for existing licenses where more than 50% ownership is transferred, supervisory personnel must be trained and a trained supervisor must be present during all hours when alcohol is served.

Server training is generally valid for 3 years and must be renewed to remain compliant with MLCC requirements.

Steps to Be Compliant in Michigan:

  1. Determine if the requirement applies to your license:
New on-premises licensees and those with more than 50% ownership change are subject to the server training requirement. Some local jurisdictions may have additional rules.
  2. Identify and train supervisory personnel:
Designate supervisors or managers responsible for alcohol service and ensure they complete MLCC-approved server training.
  3. Ensure trained supervision during alcohol service:
At least one trained supervisor must be on duty whenever alcohol is being sold or served.
  4. Maintain training records and monitor expiration:
Keep certificates and records on file and renew training approximately every three years or as required by MLCC or local authorities.

Program Benefits:

1. Mandatory Compliance for Certain Licensees
Server training is required for new on-premises licenses and those with major ownership changes, directly impacting license approval and renewal.

2. Reduced Liability & Risk Exposure
Training helps supervisors understand Michigan alcohol laws, recognize intoxication, and prevent sales to minors, reducing the risk of violations and civil liability.

3. Stronger Oversight of Alcohol Service
A trained supervisor on duty during all service hours provides real-time oversight of responsible alcohol service.

4. Standardized Knowledge Among Supervisors
Ensures all supervisory personnel receive consistent training in ID verification, refusal skills and safe service practices.

5. 3-Year Certification Cycle
A typical three-year validity period provides a clear, predictable renewal and compliance schedule.
