Massachusetts Responsible Beverage Server Training
Massachusetts does not mandate alcohol seller/server training statewide for all bars, restaurants,
or package stores. Training is voluntary at the state level, but many cities and
towns require responsible beverage server training as a condition of the local liquor license or
as an employer policy.
Under M.G.L. c.138, §12C, however, all agents and employees of a licensed caterer
who serve alcoholic beverages must be certified by a nationally recognized alcoholic beverages
server training program.
Most Massachusetts alcohol training programs issue certificates that are valid for
2–3 years, depending on the provider and local requirements.
Steps to Be Compliant in Massachusetts:
-
Check local and employer requirements:
Confirm whether your city or town, and your employer, require a specific responsible beverage
server training course.
-
Determine if you are a licensed caterer (Section 12C):
If you hold a 12C caterer’s license, all agents and employees who serve alcohol must be certified
by a nationally recognized server training program.
-
Complete an approved alcohol server/seller course:
Enroll in a Massachusetts-focused program that covers state liquor laws, ID checks, intoxication
signs, refusal skills and safe service practices.
-
Retain proof of certification:
Print or save your certificate and keep it on file for your employer and, if required, your local
licensing authority.
-
Renew on the required schedule (typically every 2–3 years):
Follow your city’s and employer’s renewal requirements and retake training before your certificate
expires.
Program Benefits:
1. Reduced Liability & Risk Exposure
Training helps prevent illegal sales to minors or intoxicated customers and lowers the risk of fines,
lawsuits and license problems.
2. Meets Local and Employer Requirements
Many municipalities and employers in Massachusetts require responsible beverage server training
even though the state does not mandate it for all servers.
3. Required for Licensed Caterers (12C)
For 12C caterers, certification by a nationally recognized server training program is required by
state law for all employees who serve alcohol.
4. Standardized Training Across Staff
Courses provide consistent instruction on Massachusetts liquor laws, ID verification, intoxication
recognition, refusal skills and handling difficult situations.
5. 2–3 Year Certification and Clear Renewal Cycle
Most certifications are valid for 2–3 years, helping businesses maintain a predictable training and
renewal schedule.
