About

Course Overview

This California RBS course teaches responsible beverage service, ID verification, signs of intoxication, intervention strategies, and the legal responsibilities for on-premises alcohol service across the state.

Who Must Take This (AB 1221)

RBS training is mandatory in California for alcohol servers and managers working at ABC on-premises licensed businesses (e.g., restaurants, bars, tasting rooms, hotels, stadiums). New hires must be trained and certified within 60 days of initial employment.

How Certification Works (Steps)

Step 1: Create an account on the California RBS Portal to obtain your 9-digit Server ID (small fee applies).

Step 2: Complete this ABC-approved online RBS training (progress saves automatically).

Step 3: Take and pass the ABC-administered RBS exam (accessed through the RBS Portal). You must complete the ABC exam within 30 days after finishing the training.

Exam & Certification

The training includes a 25-question multiple-choice exam with 3 attempts and a 70% passing score. Upon passing, your completion is reported to the ABC. Certification is valid for 36 months (3 years) and includes a printable PDF certificate and wallet card.
