Washington requires all food service workers to obtain a Food Worker Card
issued through the state health department. Food workers must complete the required training
and obtain the card within 14 days of beginning employment.
Only state-approved training is accepted. National courses are not valid in
Washington, and external programs such as common food handler courses are
not accepted for certification.
Food Worker Cards are valid for 2 years upon first issuance. Renewal cards
are valid for 3 years, or 5 years if the worker has
completed additional approved food safety training in the past two years.
The fee for a Washington Food Worker Card is generally $10.
Recertification requires completing the training and exam again through the state system.
