Hawaii’s Food Safety Education program is a statewide initiative focused on preventing
foodborne illness through education and certification. State rules require that at
least one employee present during operating hours in every food
establishment holds an approved food handlers training-level certification.
The Hawaii Department of Health offers a Food Safety Class (Food Handler level)
at no charge. This course provides a foundational understanding of
food microbiology, major foodborne illnesses, and safe food handling procedures.
Certification is valid for 3 years from the date of successful completion.
Free class schedules and registration are available through the Hawaii Department of
Health Food Safety Education program:

ANSI/ANAB-accredited online food handler or food manager courses also meet Hawaii’s
Food Handlers Education certification requirement. These programs may charge fees,
and some offer training in multiple languages.
